The History Of Vibrators

May 26th, 2010

The Electrical Vibrator has been around since the late 1800′s, it was invented by Kelsey Stinner to cure what was at that time thought of as an ailment. It was called then as “female hysteria” and “congestion of the genitalia”. This situation incorporated a quantity of grievances in adult women, including anxiety, sleeplessness, irritability, nervousness, erotic fantasies, and moisture inside the vagina. Physicians had been treating women for centuries with these complaints by accomplishing what is nowadays known as masturbation. Masturbation was shunned upon, and women were cautioned against it, and regarded this method of massage as the job of doctors and husbands. This method of vulvular massage was seen then as not associated to sex, as the theory was that a woman’s sexual pleasure needed penetration. The doctors felt this massage prolonged and hard work, and wished to speed up the procedure so they could attend to more patients. With the creation of electric vibrators doctors could now cure women of their anxiety swiftly, and created a demand for cheaper, less cumbersome machines that women can use at home.

Then a consumer model of vibrator was produced in 1902 which was the fifth domestic appliance to be electrified, after appliances such as the toaster and kettle, and was also made nearly 10 years prior to the iron and vacuum cleaner. Their acceptance increased significantly in homes and were were published in several magazines of the time, and professed to be cures for all sorts of ailments. That was until the 1920′s when they began to feature in pornography which associated the vibrator with sex, and thus could no longer be enjoyed by polite society. They were less available, but called “neck massagers” and sold via mail order catalogues.

Then in the 1980′s, Sex Toys and Vibrators became more acceptable in mainstream public, due to awareness about sexual health and HIV. Vibrators are now seen as a technique of safe sex and as a part of most female’s sex lives. The 80′s also saw Adult Stores sprouting up in almost every city. The design of many vibrators of the day was mostly basic and generally phallic shaped. At first Adult Stores were back street type shops but have grown to become luxurious shops selling designer adult toys. Vibrators now have become high-quality luxury products. Public perception of vibrators was also improved with the Sex and the City and it’s notable discussion about Rabbit Vibrators.

Modern vibrators are now sold in a range of high quality styles, and are becoming more and more acceptable for women to possess. It is in modern society acceptable for women to be recognized as having sexual desires and crave sexual release. Also with technological advances the vibrator now offers a variety of powerful vibrational types and pulsation, rechargeable batteries, made from safe and hygenic materials and in a large range of models, some even using beats from a music player or ipod to control the vibration. Vibrators and Sex toys are now thought of as an regular part of people’s lives.
